He is an Affiliated Artist at The Shakespeare Theatre Company where he has starred in works by Shakespeare, Noel Coward, Stephen Sondheim (A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to the Forum directed by Alan Paul), David Ives “School For Lies” and many others.  He is a Cabinet Member at The Studio Theatre where he has been featured in many contemporary works. Favorites include AE Houseman in “The Invention of Love” and Lewis in “The Wolfe Twins” by Rachel Bonds and directed by Mike Donahue.  He recently directed “At The Wedding” to critical acclaim at Studio where he made his directorial debut with “MOTH”. Students learn what really happens in an audition, discover helpful tools to always feel prepared, and explore what makes a good audition piece when choosing material. Local theatre casting directors will provide feedback on monologues and conduct a Q&A about the DC business. Randy Snight of Imagination Stage, PG Shakes & Maryland Renaissance Festival will be joined by Irene Martinko from Olney Theatre, and others. - [Dialects Workshop](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/dialects-workshop/): This weekend dialect intensive will introduce participants to foundational phonetic tools and discover a process for developing performance in dialect. Participants will learn the basics of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as a tool for precise speech pattern analysis and reproduction. Students will learn a speech warmup before doing a deep-dive into two distinct British English dialects: Received Pronunciation (RP) and Cockney, examining their unique phonetic features, rhythm, and intonation. The session culminates in an opportunity for attendees to perform prepared material, applying their new phonetic understanding, and receive constructive feedback in a supportive environment. - [Alexander Technique Intensive](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/alexander-technique-intensive/): This intensive taught by SAC Faculty member and certified Alexander Technique teacher Diana Bradley is held over two weekends. Alexander technique can help actors learn to become more creative, spontaneous, and expressive on stage and off. Students in this intensive workshop will focus on recognizing and relinquishing unwanted patterns of thought, movement, and behavior. - [Auditioning for Television and Film](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/auditioning-for-television-and-film/): This two-day workshop replicates the "real world" television audition process. Students dig deep into preparing for Co-Star, Guest Star, and Series Regular auditions. A camera and playback screen is used so that the class can watch their fellow actors work live. Students also learn about the mindset to have on the business of acting to help book roles and gain representation. - [Auditioning for Theatre: Monologues & Sides](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/auditioning-for-theatre-monologues-sides/): As home to over 80 theatre companies, big and small, the Washington, DC area is a destination for actors, directors, and theatre artists. This two-day workshop offers practical tools for preparing audition monologues and sides. Students explore comedy through exercises, clowning, and scene work in four periods: Modern Comedy, Comedy of Wit and Manners, Shakespeare and Molière, and Commedia dell'arte. - [Directing](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/directing/): Directing is intended to enhance the skills and understanding of actors, directors, playwrights, and filmmakers. Through a series of lectures and scene presentations, the class focuses on script analysis and preparation, blocking and movement, business, uses of improvisation and working with actors, rhythm and tempo, theatrical organization, auditioning, and the integration of all aspects of technical theatre. - [Beckett, Pinter, Albee, Mamet](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/beckett-pinter-albee-mamet/): This is a class focusing on the development of the great Modernists: Beckett from Ireland, Pinter from England, Albee and Mamet in America. Students are challenged by interpreting scenes from these often controversial playwrights, beginning with experiments in the work of Caryl Churchill. The class includes both lectures and scene work. - [Contemporary American Realists](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/contemporary-american-realists/): This is an advanced scene study class exploring contemporary American identity. Students participate in lectures and scene work exploring Naturalist, Poetic, and Fabulist dramatists, stretching the actor's vocabulary in Realism. - [Contemporary Irish Playwrights](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/contemporary-irish-playwrights/): Contemporary Irish Playwrights is an advanced scene study class focused on leaders in contemporary Irish playwriting. This course allows students to explore the unique styles and language that appear in Irish theatre, focusing on themes of immigration, colonization, poverty, and feminism. - [Great Living Brits](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/great-living-brits/): From Caryl Churchill, Allen Bennett, and Tom Stoppard, American actors have been influenced by the language and thematic challenges of contemporary British writing. Requiring complex interpretation and advanced language skills, actors explore these living legends though the lectures and scene work. - [O’Neill, Williams, Miller](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/oneill-williams-miller/): O'Neill, Williams, Miller is an advanced scene study class exploring the works of America's Master playwrights whointroduced the country to Realism. Students will work on scenes from some of the finest plays of the Twentieth century - American classics such as Long Day's Journey Into Night, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Death of a Salesman, as well as look at the works of Odets and Inge. - [Shaw, Ibsen, Chekhov](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/shaw-ibsen-chekhov/): Shaw, Ibsen, Chekhov is an in-depth scene study class focusing on the origins of realistic acting. Influenced by the wave following Stanislavsky's experiments, this class examines Shaw in England, Ibsen in Scandinavia, and Chekhov in Stanislavsky's Russia which ushers in the dominant acting style of the 20th Century. Each student explores the playwrights through lectures and scene work. - [Auditioning](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/auditioning/): Auditioning teaches students the nuts and bolts of how to audition for professional work. Work on audition monologues - both contemporary and classical, each in comic and serious modes - to build a repertoire of audition material with attention to individual selection and professional presentation. Students gain the skills to prepare sides, develop cold-reading skills, and review the basics of self-taping for auditions. The class also includes development of headshots and resumes, as well as a working knowledge of the business side of acting. - [Working With New Scripts](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/working-with-new-scripts/): This class puts directors, playwrights, and actors in the same room. The class focuses on rapid memorization, adapting to changes, reinterpreting, and responding to changing directorial needs. - [Young Actors Intensive](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/young-actors-intensive/): Three-week Summer Intensives pair activities and skill-building exercises in realistic and classical acting with voice and body classes. Each day students explore movement, voice, and musical theatre, followed by a two and a half hour intensive acting class. Students apply their skills to monologues, scenes, songs, and ensemble pieces. Each session finishes with a presentation of their work for friends and family. - [Comedy Improv](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/comedy-improv/): Designed specifically for actors of all levels, this dynamic workshop immerses students in the art of improvisation, helping them hone acting skills and unlock potential. Through a series of engaging exercises, games, and scene work, students learn to trust their instincts, embrace uncertainty, and develop comedic timing. Students work on building strong characters on the spot, thinking on their feet, and crafting compelling narratives without a script. - [Producing for the Actor](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/producing-for-the-actor/): This two-day, in person workshop gives students the skills needed to produce their own theatrical work, from pre-production through opening. Students learn about the collaborative work of producing a show, and explore various types of producing, ways to raise funds, and insider tips on navigating the process. - [Actor’s Process](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/actors-process/): Actor's process allows students with minimal or no prior training and experience to build a strong foundation in acting to be built upon as they move through the curriculum. Students develop and sharpen self-awareness, observation, creative imagination, improvisational skills, and the use of the body and voice. Each student works on an individual monologue. - [Principles of Realism](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/principles-of-realism/): Principles of Realism helps students develop a process and approach to text using stimulus-response, motivation, characterization, interplay, and subtext. The class uses creative exercises such as pantomime and improvisation to introduce concepts which are applied later in the class to scene work on a character from a realistic play. - [Character and Emotion](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/character-and-emotion/): Character and Emotion builds on the work of Principles of Realism, deepening students' skills in Realism. Students in this class will develop a character out of their range, focus on character building, and work on heightened emotional content. - [Shakespeare for Young Actors](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/shakespeare-for-young-actors/): Shakespeare for Young Actors is a class for advanced young students, aged 12-17. In addition to weekly work on creative exercises such as pantomimes and improvisations, students work on Shakespearean monologues and scenes utilizing modern Play On Shakespeare text. - [Movement 1](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/movement-1/): Movement teaches students to identify, relax, and warm up parts of the body that hold tension. Students will work to develop free movement and expressiveness. This class introduces tools to work on specific posture, gesture, and movement, allowing students to expand their physical potential. - [Shakespeare I](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/shakespeare-1/): Shakespeare I introduces classical acting techniques, focusing on vocal development and specificity, diction, physical clarity, textual interpretation, as well as the use of imagery and tone color, useful for all actors. Students work on a character from Shakespeare in monologues, soliloquys, and scenes. - [Voice 1](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/voice-1/): Voice 1 provides basic techniques for vocal preparation and performance. Students develop their projection, vocal quality, range, energy, and expressiveness as well as understanding of vocal production using relaxation exercises and basic physical work. - [Greek Tragedy](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/greek-tragedy/): Greek Tragedy explores the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, with work on choruses, solo pieces, and scenes. Students deepen emotional connection and develop oral interpretation and physical control while building ensemble skills. - [Classical Voice and Movement](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/classical-voice-and-movement/): Classical Voice & Movement expands on the work done in Voice 1 and Movement 1 and introduces the vocal and physical skills necessary for classical work. Students develop clarity in classical material and learn to ground themselves and strip away physically as needed in classical performance. Skills covered in this course are essential to success in Shakespeare I. - [Alexander Technique](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/alexander-technique/): Alexander Technique identifies and replaces unwanted habits with greater body awareness, poise, and ease of movement. It allows students to move with more variety, ease, energy, balance, support, and coordination as well as improve their use of breath and vocal production. Students discover more efficient ways to use their bodies through discussion, observation, and hands-on work to become more creative, spontaneous, and expressive. - [Improvisation for the Actor](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/improvisation-for-the-actor/): Through a series of playful exercises students expand their range of expression physically, vocally, and emotionally. This class helps the actor discover and trust their inner creative impulses, encourages honesty, spontaneity, and awareness. Actors practice interplay and build and ensemble by engaging with other actors. - [Dialects](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/dialects/): Dialects introduces actors to the fundamentals of performing in accents or dialects. Students build their listening and imitation skills, learn warm up processes, and how to utilitize online dialect resources, as well as the International Phonetic Alphabet. This class includes work on up to four dialects for the stage. - [Standard Stage Speech](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/standard-stage-speech/): Standard Stage Speech is designed to provide tools and strategies for speakers with regional or foreign accents who want to increase intelligibility and broaden their range as actors. Students learn basic and advanced tools for accent modification and dialect acquisition, including: articulation warm-ups, speech anatomy, and the International Phonetic Alphabet. These tools are applied to text using the General American Dialect. - [Stage Combat Workshop](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/stage-combat/): Expand your skills and learn the fundamentals of stage combat with DC's preeminent fight choreographer Robb Hunter. Enhance your physical skill and confidence with safe and realistic techniques to portray the illusion of fighting. - [Singer’s Process](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/singers-process/): Singer's Process introduces students to the basics of singing. Students work on freeing the body, expanding breath capacity and the ability to create sound, learning to sing on pitch, and exploring and understanding lyrics, rhythm, and emotion in a song, and singing with a piano. Students prepare a song with piano accompaniment. - [Young Actors Ensemble](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/young-actors-ensemble/): The Young Actors Ensemble is modeled after our adult curriculum and meets weekly, on Saturdays during the Fall and Spring semesters. Classes include theatre games, pantomimes, improvisations, and ensemble work to allow students to build and explore skills necessary for realistic playing . Students prepare monologues and scenes from contemporary and classical literature. Each semester culminates in a public showing of their work. - [Shakespeare II](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/shakespeare-2/): Shakespeare II is an advanced course which deepens students' understanding and experience in classical style. The class includes rigorous work in the preparation of monologues and scenes. Special emphasis is on the interpretation of text and vocal intensity. - [Musical Theatre](https://studioactingconservatory.org/classes/musical-theatre/): Musical Theatre enhances students' ability to create unique song interpretations, find a character's arc throughout a song, and explore realistic performance techniques to create bold and vibrant characters. Students will find their true singing voice, reduce singing anxiety, and combine singing and acting skills, as well as learning how to choose and prepare repertoire. Musical Theatre is intended for singers with some experience.
