A highlight on recent Directing Alum Ben Bogen, discussing life after The Conservatory and his current role as Fyedka in Signature Theatre’s Fiddler On The Roof.
What is your current production/job and what role are you playing?
I’m currently taking over as Fyedka in Fiddler on the Roof at Signature Theatre and am about to choreograph Shrek at The Henegar Theatre in Florida.
What is your favorite class you took at SAC and why?
Directing (it’s the only class I had the chance to enroll in). But I loved being forced to trust my creative vision, make new connections, problem solve, and enjoy the process again.
In what ways are you using the training you received at SAC in your current role and/or how has it helped you?
It has helped me be okay with something being messy before it’s “good”. It’s also allowed me to continue trying new ways of storytelling rather than going for the obvious choice. My final scene was in the thrust and now I’m less afraid of directing in that style.
Do you have any advice for incoming conservatory students, working in the industry or otherwise?
Put in the work, go with the flow, find people that love what you bring to the table, and most importantly don’t settle for experiences that don’t serve you. Some artistic collaborations work and others don’t. If you’re in a situation where you are brought in to help create art and then that work isn’t being respected; know when to walk away.
What excites you most about your current project/role?
I love that after a long break I’m getting to be in a musical again and play an actual role.
How long is the show playing and where?
I officially joined the cast on the 11th and it runs till January 25th at Signature Theatre in VA.
If you could describe your time at SAC in three words what would you say?
Challenging, Growing, Rewarding
What is a dream role/production you would love to be a part of?
I’d love to choreograph American Idiot
